Studies on Certain Growing Aspects of Wild Saxifraga fortunei var . glabrescens in Korea

Abstract
Saxifraga fortunei var. glabrescens lives in wet stony areas and this belongs to Saxifragaceae of perennial grass, being resistant to shade, wet, and dry.
It is of value for landscaping as rock garden plants, pot flowers, parasitic plants because of its leaves and flowers.
The present study was carried out to investigate the morphological and ecological characteristics and growing environments at the habitat and to clarify the vegetation association, seed germination and propagation of Saxifraga, etc..
The results are as follows;
1) Saxifragaceae plant is perennial grass which produce white flowers from August to September and its radicle leaves were obicular and petiole length was 3-30§¯.
2) It grew best during the period of May, 20 to June, 5 and the growth ceased in the early of August.
3) Average elevation of the native habitat was 290 to 400m and light intensity of the area was approximately 2.0%.
4) The best growth occurred in the optimum light of 2.0 to 3.0% whereas at the intensity of 0.02% to 0.2% the growth was impossible. And at the intensity of 60% the plants were solarized.
5) The adequate soil condition for Saxifraga growth was the mixture of vermiculite and sand (1 to 1). The mixture of humus and briquet ash, however, was not favorable for the growth.
6) The optimum temperature for seed germination was 20¡É. The germination rate was 97% under the dark condition and 93% under the light condition.
7) The best germination was obtained at 5¡É of wet storage.
8) The plants transplanted from the native habitat to the shaded area showed the best growth.
